Ignorance is NOT Bliss

With just a few more hours of sunshine, the tree above
will be glorious in its spring beauty!
Our large lilac bush is fighting back valiantly
from its hasty and unprofessional pruning.
(Every year, I tell myself we're going to learn to do it correctly.
Every year, we don't.)
 Still, what's not to love?

Above, one of three viburnum bushes deals with the same
distress as the lilac bush...
while the bleeding heart thrives on the ignorance of its gardeners...
Ignorance is NOT bliss,
but sometimes it's close to it.

  1. Everything looks great! I am not sure how you prune a lilac but in Maine and Germany we just kind of left them all alone. The lilac hedges grew to great heights and bloomed their hearts out. Pretty viburnum!

    1. I have a feeling our old lilac bush would have been better off if we HAD "jut kind of left it all alone"! And our viburnum? We handed a trimmer to our son who was here during my husband's surgery and told him to have a serious go at the three of them! He did!

  2. We usually leave lilacs to their own devices here too. I agree with Tina, your plants look beautiful celebrating spring! Personally, I enjoy being blissfully ignorant.

    1. You are SO kind (and one of the least "blissfully ignorant" persons I know)!

    1. Me, too, Mari! The worst thing about it is that they don't last long enough...

  4. I'll bet your garden smells wonderful! I prune my lilacs in the week or two after they stop blooming. Just enough to take of the dead tips and remove any dead canes or ones that are rubbing across another badly. They're easy to spot. Then, let it go!

    1. Well, thanks for that tip! This particular bush is REALLY old. There are several dead canes we ought to get rid of for sure....

  5. Lovely color at least going on for a short while for you. It's been so sparse here that I wonder if it happened. :)

    1. Well, it's a little deceiving. I focused on what WAS colorful and cropped out most of the rest.

  6. My small Lilac did not bloom this spring. More then likely the crazy winter we had did something to it. Oh well, it still looks good so I shall leave it be. My dad lost his old Lilac a few years ago. I think it finally met its lifespan...
