Bottle Crazy!

While cleaning out the garage this Memorial Day morning,
my husband came across miscellaneous bottle-worthy contraptions
and we went a little Bottle Crazy!
 From old, rusty candle holders,
to white former curtain holders (we think)...
 and manythings in between
he fashioned bottle holders!
Then I found a place for them and the bottles
which we found (empty on roadsides, etc.)
Now, if only I could figure out how to get the labels off!
(We even tried to fill in the base of a
floundering, transplanted Boxwood bush with bottles!)

  2. What a great idea.. I will be eyeing things to see if they'd make good bottle holders. The one I have, My husband had made especially for me. Long ago I saw just a pole with many long nails all around to hold the bottles. That's really what I wanted. But now that I've seen your ideas, I just might have to copy you! The labels are hard to get off. Soaking in hot soapy water and scrapeing with a dish scrubber gets the most of it off...

    1. I tried getting a label or two off this way and gave up. I'm NOT a very patient person! (I've tried Goo-Be-Gone or Goop-Off, whatever it is. That didn't help much either.)

  3. I think you should leave the labels on. They look cool. I love your repurposing!

  4. I have been looking for a bottle tree holder and found one while recently in Asheville. The price was too high for me so I walked away! Now I see I do not have to purchase an expensive holder as other things will do the job! Wow, thanks for this post! Enjoyed your postings below as well.

    1. I'm "with" you, Skeeter. I have looked wistfully at some of the beautiful (a.k.a. expensive) bottle trees and have had to pass on them. I've VERY happy with some of the ones we've contrived here at "Gatescroft". I'm sure you'll come up with some great alternatives, too

  5. Very nice use of the bottles. They look great! I soak my wine bottles in water for a long time then use a steel scrubber to scrub off the label being careful not to scratch the bottle.

On your iris here is my answer I put on my blog but thought I'd leave it here too: This link to Schreiners says to cut off stems low to the ground after bloom. It is also what I do and I am sure Angie does it as well. http://www.schreinersgardens.com/about_iris.shtml The section you are looking for is under 'general iris care'.

The only way to remove weeds might be to dig and replant. It is an easy job best done in late summer. Be sure to let the rhizomes bask in the sun when replanting.

    1. Thanks, Tina. Guess I was too lazy to look it up, but went ahead and did (almost intuitively) what you just described. I really appreciate having the link to Schreiners.
